Alphabet Soup Of Education

Alphabet Soup Of Education

There are tons of acronyms we use in education.  In the normal course of the day in communication among ourselves we use them freely knowing the colleague we are speaking with understands what we are talking about.  Unfortunately there are times when we have meetings with parents we use these acronyms as if we are speaking to our colleagues and parents present have no idea what we are talking about.  I have compiled a list of common acronyms and their meanings in the hopes to help you understand, however if you are ever in a meeting with us and we throw out one of these acronyms and you don't understand PLEASE let us know!  We want you to understand everything we are talking about.  I hope these acronyms and their meanings will help in the event  you find yourself in a meeting and hear a staff member use them to better understand without having to ask.  I will try my best to explain these acronyms in terms someone outside the field of education would best be able to understand.

IEP: "Individual Education Plan" - An IEP is a document specific to a student who qualifies for specific supports based on a learning disability.  This document identifies assessment information as well as individual student goals for the special education teacher to focus on leading to improved academic achievement, even in the face of their specific learning disability.

MAP: "Measure of Academic Progress" is a nationally normed test GGS started at the beginning of last year.  We taking this assessment in all grades in the fall, winter and spring in the areas of Math and Reading.  The results of how students perform is available immediately after they complete the assessment and identifies specific areas where students have strengths or weaknesses.  This assessment is extremely valuable as it gives staff immediate feedback (and the students) in order to inform us on how make any necessary adjustments in instruction for each individual student, or groups of students with similar needs.
