Mrs. Sovey Dedication

It was a packed house at the GGS girl's volleyball game on Tuesday, February 19th, 2019.  Just before the 8th grade game began there was a surprise recognition of Mrs. Sharon Sovey for 34 years of service to Gardner Grade School and to the entire Gardner community.  During her career she has taught, sponsored or coached basketball, softball, track, speech, Ag Jeopardy, battle of the books, student and adult book clubs, scholastic book fairs, family reading nights, reading conference presenter as well as serving as athletic director.  During the last 24 years she has dedicated her time to keeping the score books for both basketball and volleyball with rarely missing a game.  During the speech from Mr. Austin McDowell, Athletic Director at GGS he shared many thanks and thoughts from many people unable to attend who have been impacted by her in a positive way.  At one point he asked for attendees to stand if they have been taught by, a parent of, worked with or in some way been impacted by Mrs. Sovey.  It was a standing ovation with not only tears shed from Mrs. Sovey, but tears being shed by a majority of the spectators in the gymnasium.

Although Mrs. Sovey will be retiring and moving south with her husband at the conclusion of this year she will always be a part of our Gardner Grade School Community.  This coming summer there will be a permanent dedication of a simple "Mrs. Sovey's Section" painted on the gymnasium floor in front of the scorer's table as a constant reminder of all she has done for the school, students, parents and the community.

Mrs. Sovey has been an amazing mentor, colleague, and friend since I started working at Gardner Grade School 7 years ago. She goes out of her way to welcome new staff, build relationships with coworkers, and make our entire GGS staff feel like a family. I've heard many people comment about our close staff here at Gardner and I credit that 100% to Mrs. Sovey. She's the heart of our GGS family and will be greatly missed next year!

I thank Mrs. Sovey or Miss K. as we knew her as for so many years of fond memories at GGS. She truly has been such an essential part of the school. I remember back fondly of my year in her 4th grade classroom where she made learning interesting and fun as well as all of the years of sports that she supported, coached, and spent so many hours with. She truly is a selfless person always putting her students and their families first and always with a smile on her face as well. If not for her influence in my life, I am not sure if I would have had many of the opportunities that I had. I truly thank her for being such a joy in my life and also a great role model for me to look up to. GGS will not be the same without her!

Mrs. Sovey has been such a role model for me in my four years of teaching here at GGS. I will miss her humor, laugh, and just her mere presence in these hallways. It has been a pleasure to call her my coworker! She'll be greatly missed!

Mrs. Sovey, The staff and students at Gardner are going to miss you. Your are a teacher that always put students first. I will always remember your pep talks you gave to students in getting ready for PARCC test. Also, to the worlds best basketball/Volleyball bookkeeper. Good luck down in moving home and enjoying retirement. You are a Gem!
